a visually and conceptually beautiful project. Karaft himself describes it like this:

“When nature illuminates the darkness, it is not done by a simple click. Natural light comes into being by a visual process. It is not only helping you to see well, it is an experience and affects your mood. This project deals with the issue of light creation. The light and the heat generated thereby create the lampshade as a visible act of deformation.”

following the ABC house by urban architecture office i stumbled upon their FKI house. although i dont find the base structure as exciting as the ABC house’s i do prefer the fact that it seems more open and has yet managed to continue the obvious flow of surfaces as they change in purpose throughout rooms. major defecit in both houses is the bathroom. while in most contemporary western houses the bathroom which i have seen the bathroom is taking on an increasingly centralised role, urban architecture office seem to include it merely as a necessity rather than a place of luxury. i dont know whether this is a cultural difference or just the firm’s take on a modern home but i feel that this could be improved.

what i greatly admire however is the woodgrain effect which they have worked into the cement. a beautiful detail which deserves it’s own special mention. to finish this house off, i think that a really bright wash of vivid colours, such as used in the participatory project by boa mistura, as well heavy dark wood furniture upholstered with battered leather (all upcycled) and a lot of natural greenery (both in the kitchen and other rooms) would be perfect.

an exploration of the imperfections within controlled products this show will be on show at the milan design week 2012. israel-based designer hilla shamia combines the natural shapes of the wood with very geometric square shapes through the finish and metal, literally molding the two opposites toghether. aesthetically pleasing and very exciting from a design point of view.

from the outside it first reminded me of a greek house, minus the white and blue paint wash and, naturally, modernised. bt this house is so much more than a first impression inside lines run between rooms turning floors into worktops in very basic and fluid movement. must be a very exciting space to live in. i am sure that if it were made more homely and with possibly more access to light, placed in a slightly different location, it could become something even more special.

i bought this magazine after reading an article online which was reporting on someone who had been ‘discovered’ by it’s nice that. i read some of the articles of theirs online, but i prefer to have something physically in my hands so i decided to order a copy of the new magazine which came out on the 21. march. it took a week to get to me but has been really worth it as it covers a broad range of topics and personalities. very recomendable

a graphic artist who i have posted about already, parra, has recently been comissioned to do this mural on a 60ft wall in san francisco’s moma. when speaking to it’s nice that he describes it like this: “It’s a huge 60 feet wide white wall with a variety of weirdly shaped characters revolving around the sentence: “She was alone most of the time, she got weirded out easily.” The text is inspired by Kate Bush. For some reason I listened to her entire oeuvre when making this piece back in Amsterdam, including her latest album. I started reading about her and created that line of text. It’s also a bit about me, about keeping the world at a distance and closing the curtains for three days straight.” the text flows with extreme ease and, most of the time, is very easy to follow. the bizzare charactes which accompany it almost take you into a dream-like fantastical world which is brought back into the graphice through the use of only black and white. a really interesting look at the intersection between text and imagination.

always at the forefront economically as well as in design germany has made a clever step in tying themselves and the emerging market of brazil through the Germany + Brazil 2013-2014 scheme. germany has the experience and brazil the potential, an interesting mix for the future. especially for myself, being from a german background and aspiring to move to brazil in the future. my reasons before were economic upturn in the country plus the sheer quantity of art and design which is coming out of the country and appeals to me. the fact that there is a connection to germany may make it even easier.

a little bit late since the test was in february but i love motorbikes and these pictures are lush. i’m backing stefan bradl to win the moto gp as he is a german lad who has risen to this higher class after winning the moto 2 last season. i doubt that he will win it in his first go but i hope he makes the podium a couple of times and finishes in the top 5.

apart from that i am hopin that 18 year old jonas folger manages to find a sponsor so that he can compete in the lowest engine category, the moto 3

sticking with colours. i find these articles very interesting as even something as simple yet broad as colour can be in or out of fashion. it shows us the vast extent to which some people adhere to it. i do not fully believe in these trends as they are never 100 per cent accurate and not exclusive i.e. just because something isnt that colour it cannot fare well in 2012. however i do believe that colours develop so that if a lot of something is being used it will grow in popularity and thereby become more successful.
